In a mission of trying to reduce our footprint, but because the market explode our usage too … we need to identify the best architecture pattern and what to do or not to do!

By using Cloud Technology, your first fear might be about the storage of your data.

Let’s check what we can do using Google Cloud Storage.

Google and his Jedi Master Steren have developed a great tool called Region Picker.

What’s interesting here is that I’m from France and If I want the best in class datacenter in terms of green, the result is :

In this scenario the most surprising news is the first choice, which is not European based ! (the 3rd too).

That mean you can feel how Google is confident about his amazing fiber-optic network in terms of performances.

But now back to our original discussion let’s do a test with the 2 europeans datacenter proposed here :

  • Finland
  • Paris

I will do a quick test which is to create a bucket in the related locations + store the same amount of data on each one to check the carbon footprint report numbers after one month.

Why ?

Because Finland is a 100% Google owned DC which mean best in class for design, cooling etc…but where the energy is coming from different sources and mostly no nuclear one (wind turbine).

Instead of Paris which is a colocation DC but where the energy is coming 100% from Nuclear which is the best in terms of carbon emission.

Now what about the results ?

Whatever the scope we are looking at, the 1,2 and 3 the results are … the same !

That mean a well designed DC seems to be equivalent to the best in class energy supply. And of course that mean the choice proposed by the picker is reflected into the results :)

Now what about the money engaged ?

Same result, price are almost the same (aligned with the documentation).

To conclude take your time and place your bets where it’s the most important for you :)
